East Semitic god, and the head of the Assyrian pantheon in Mesopotamian religion, worshipped mainly in the northern half of Mesopotamia, and parts of north-east Syria and south-east Asia Minor which constituted old Assyria. He may have had a solar iconography.
From the 13th century BCE onwards he gains ascendancy over Enlil oust him from the dominant role and takes over the titles great mountain and father of the gods. From the 19th century BC onward he is equated with Ansar.
Among his functions or the judicial office otherwise reserved for the son God and the conduct of war. In Assyrian art he is shown as a God standing on the wing disc of the sun and holding or bending a bow
